The Awkward Question

A newly married couple was lying in bed one evening, enjoying a quiet moment together.

After a while, the husband turned to his wife and asked, “Can I ask you something?”

She looked at him. “Sure.”

He hesitated for a second, then said, “How many men have you slept with before me?”

His wife didn’t answer.

She simply stared up at the ceiling in complete silence.

The husband waited, then tried again. “It’s okay. You can tell me. I just want us to be honest with each other.”

Still nothing.

She didn’t move, didn’t speak, and didn’t even look at him.

The husband began to feel guilty.

“I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I didn’t mean to upset you. I just thought we could talk about anything.”

His wife remained silent, eyes fixed on the ceiling.

Feeling terrible, he sighed. “Forget I asked. Really. I don’t want you to be upset.”

When she still didn’t respond, he moved closer, put his arms around her, and began kissing her gently, trying to make things right.

After a few moments, she finally snapped out of it, turned to him angrily, and said:

“Damn it! You made me lose count!”
