One sunny Saturday morning, a man was outside mowing his lawn, enjoying the fresh air and the peace and quiet of his neighborhood.
Everything was perfectly normal until he noticed something rather unusual coming down the street.
Two hearses were driving past his house, moving incredibly slowly.
The man stopped his lawnmower and watched curiously.
Behind the two hearses walked a solemn-looking gentleman holding a dog on a leash.
But that wasn’t the strangest part.
Following the man and his dog was an enormous line of men, all walking silently in single file.
There must have been at least fifty or sixty of them!
The man scratched his head.
“What on earth is going on here?” he wondered. “I’ve never seen a funeral procession like that!”
Unable to contain his curiosity, he left his lawnmower, hurried down the driveway, and caught up with the gentleman walking the dog.
“Excuse me, sir,” he said politely. “I’m terribly sorry to bother you at a time like this, but may I ask who’s in the first hearse?”
The gentleman sighed deeply.
“That’s my wife,” he replied sadly. “My dog bit her a few days ago, and unfortunately, she passed away later at the hospital.”
The neighbor looked shocked.
“Oh, my goodness! That’s absolutely terrible! I’m so sorry for your loss.”
He hesitated for a moment, then glanced at the second hearse.
“I hope you don’t mind me asking another question, but… who’s in the second hearse?”
The gentleman shook his head.
“That’s my mother-in-law. The dog bit her too, and sadly, she also died later at the hospital.”
The neighbor stood completely still for a few seconds.
He looked at the two hearses.
Then at the dog.
Then back at the gentleman.
After a long, thoughtful pause, he leaned closer and quietly asked,
“Can I borrow your dog?”
The gentleman looked at him and replied,
“Get in line.”
