In the heart of New Orleans, there was a rather unusual restaurant that had become famous for making one very bold promise.
Right outside the entrance, a huge sign proudly announced:
“ORDER ANYTHING YOU WANT! IF WE CAN’T SERVE IT, WE’LL GIVE YOU $5,000!”
One afternoon, a man walking down the street noticed the sign and stopped in his tracks.
He read it once.
Then he read it again.
“Five thousand dollars?” he muttered. “You’ve got to be kidding me!”
He looked through the restaurant window, shook his head, and grinned.
“There’s absolutely no way they can serve anything someone asks for. This has to be the easiest five grand I’ll ever make!”
Determined to prove the restaurant wrong, he marched inside.
A friendly waiter greeted him, led him to a comfortable table, and handed him a menu.
“Good afternoon, sir! Welcome to our restaurant. What can we prepare for you today?”
The man leaned back in his chair, pretending to think.
Then, with a mischievous smile, he announced,
“I’d like an elephant’s ear… and a muffin, please.”
The waiter didn’t even blink.
“Certainly, sir. Just give us a few moments.”
And off he went to the kitchen.
The man could barely contain his laughter.
“An elephant’s ear!” he thought. “Let’s see them get out of this one!”
Several minutes passed.
He glanced at his watch, already imagining what he’d do with his $5,000.
Then the waiter returned.
But instead of admitting defeat, he politely cleared his throat.
“Excuse me, sir. The kitchen just needs one small clarification.”
The man raised an eyebrow.
“Oh? What’s that?”
“Would you prefer the ear of an African elephant or an Indian elephant?”
The man’s confident smile disappeared.
He stared at the waiter in disbelief.
“Uh… an Indian elephant, I suppose.”
“Excellent choice, sir!” the waiter replied cheerfully.
And back to the kitchen he went.
The man sat frozen.
“Wait a minute,” he thought. “They can’t possibly have elephant ears back there… can they?”
Before he could make sense of it, the waiter returned again.
“Terribly sorry to bother you once more, sir, but the chef has one final question.”
The man swallowed nervously.
“Y-yes?”
“Would you prefer the left ear or the right ear?”
Now the man was genuinely starting to panic.
He had expected to walk out with $5,000, not receive a bill for some outrageously expensive elephant delicacy!
He loosened his collar and stammered,
“Uhhh… the left ear, I guess.”
“Splendid, sir! Thank you!”
The waiter disappeared into the kitchen once again.
By now, the man was sweating.
He stared at the kitchen door, desperately wondering how much an elephant’s ear could possibly cost.
Five long minutes passed.
Then, finally, the waiter emerged carrying a large serving platter.
And in his other hand…
An envelope containing $5,000!
The man’s eyes lit up.
He could hardly believe his luck!
The waiter approached the table, carefully set everything down, and said apologetically,
“Here is your order sir. We do apologize, but we are out of muffins for today.”
