One afternoon, a nun walked into a doctor’s office, looking rather uncomfortable.
“Good afternoon, Doctor,” she said politely. “I’m terribly sorry to bother you, but I’ve been having the most awful hiccups!”
The doctor smiled reassuringly.
“Don’t worry, Sister. That’s what I’m here for. How long have you been suffering from them?”
“Oh, Doctor, it’s been nearly three days!” she exclaimed. “I’ve tried drinking water, holding my breath, eating sugar, and even standing on my head! Nothing seems to work!”
The doctor nodded thoughtfully.
“Well, let’s have a look at you and see what we can do.”
He asked her to sit on the examination table and began checking her pulse, listening to her heartbeat, and examining her carefully.
The nun continued hiccupping throughout the examination.
Every few seconds…
“HIC!”
The doctor scratched his chin, clearly considering his options.
Then, suddenly, his expression became very serious.
He put down his stethoscope, looked the nun straight in the eyes, and said,
“Sister, I’m afraid I have some rather unexpected news for you.”
The nun looked worried.
“Oh, heavens! What is it, Doctor?”
He took a deep breath.
“Well, according to my examination… you’re pregnant.”
The nun’s eyes grew enormous.
“P-P-PREGNANT?!”
Her face turned pale, her hands flew to her chest, and before the doctor could say another word…
THUD!
She fainted right off the examination table!
The doctor immediately called for assistance.
Within moments, nurses and emergency medical staff rushed into the room to help the unconscious nun.
One nurse hurried over to the doctor, looking absolutely horrified.
“Doctor! What on earth happened?! She was perfectly fine when she walked in!”
The doctor calmly adjusted his glasses.
“Well, I examined her and I told her she was pregnant.”
The nurse gasped.
“She is?!”
“Actually, no” said the doctor “but it sure as hell cured her hiccups, didn’t it?!”
