An elderly lady was standing on the deck of a cruise ship, holding tightly to the railing while a fierce wind whipped across the ocean.
With one hand, she clutched the rail.
With the other, she held firmly onto her brand-new hat.
The wind grew stronger.
Her dress began flapping wildly around her legs.
A gentleman walking nearby noticed what was happening and hesitated for a moment.
Finally, he approached her politely.
“Pardon me, madam, but your dress is blowing quite a bit in this wind.”
The elderly lady nodded calmly.
“Yes, I know,” she replied, still holding on. “But I need both hands to keep my hat from flying away.”
The gentleman blinked.
He looked at the hat.
Then at the dress.
Then back at the lady.
Another gust of wind came through, and the situation became even more noticeable.
The gentleman cleared his throat awkwardly.
“Madam,” he said gently, “the problem is… the wind is lifting your dress a little higher than you may realize.”
The elderly lady finally glanced down.
She studied the situation for a second.
The gentleman expected her to panic, scream, or at least grab the hem of her dress immediately.
Instead, she simply looked back up at him with a twinkle in her eye.
“Sir, what’s under this dress is 90 years old. But this hat? I just bought it yesterday.”
