One evening, a teenage girl and her mother went shopping together.
After choosing a few items, they walked over to the checkout counter.
The girl looked at the cashier and quietly said, “Hi.”
Then she opened her wallet and began searching for the correct amount of money.
She carefully counted the bills, stopped, started again, and then struggled with the coins.
It was obvious that she was nervous and having trouble working out exactly how much she needed to pay.
The cashier said nothing.
Instead of helping, she simply stood there and watched as the girl fumbled through the money, muttered numbers under her breath, and repeatedly checked the total.
After an awkward few minutes, the teenager finally managed to count out the correct amount.
The cashier completed the transaction, handed her the receipt, and the girl quickly walked away with her mother.
As they headed toward the car, the mother noticed how embarrassed her daughter looked.
Before she could ask what was wrong, the teenager sighed and said:
“That was my math tutor.”
