All through dinner, my wife’s best friend’s four-year-old daughter kept staring at me.
She sat directly across the table, barely touching her food, her eyes fixed on me the entire time.
At first, I tried to ignore it.
Then I started wondering if something was wrong.
I looked down at my shirt to see if I had spilled anything. Nothing.
I wiped my mouth, checked my face, and even patted my hair into place, thinking maybe something looked strange.
But no matter what I did, the little girl kept staring.
After a while, everyone else at the table noticed too.
The conversation slowed down, then stopped completely.
Finally, I smiled at her and said, “Sweetheart, can I ask you something?”
She nodded.
“Why have you been staring at me all evening? Is there something wrong?”
The room went quiet as everyone waited for her answer.
The little girl looked at me very seriously and said:
“Mommy tells Daddy you drink like a fish… I’m just waiting to see how.”
