I was sitting on the train, pretending to read a newspaper while actually staring at the same paragraph for ten minutes, when I noticed a very pretty girl looking at me.
At first, I thought she was looking at someone behind me.
I turned around.
There was only an old man asleep with his mouth open.
So yes… she was definitely looking at me.
I immediately sat up straighter, pulled in my stomach and tried to look mysterious. Unfortunately, holding my breath made me look less like James Bond and more like a man choking on a peanut.
Still, she kept glancing at me.
I smiled.
She smiled back.
My confidence exploded.
In my head, romantic music started playing. I imagined us telling our grandchildren how we met on a train. I even wondered whether she preferred a beach wedding or something more traditional.
I smiled at her again and said hello.
“Hi,” she said, then asked me “Can I be completely honest with you???”
“Of course,” I said to her.
At that moment, I knew it. She had fallen for me. Maybe it was my eyes. Maybe my charm. Maybe the way I had successfully opened a packet of biscuits without spilling crumbs everywhere.
She leaned closer.
“Well, every time you smile at me, it makes me want to invite you back to my place.”
My heart started celebrating before the rest of me understood what was happening.
I grinned like a lottery winner.
“Great,” I said. “Are you married?”
“No,” she replied “I’m a dentist!!!”
